Garland & Owens Finish Strong At IAAF U20 Worlds

Kyle Garland and Ayden Owens finished up the two-day decathlon at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Garland, competing for the United States finished the competition in seventh in the world, while Owens, representing Puerto Rico, wound up 12th.

Garland was third in the 110-meter hurdles (13.99), seventh in the discus (42.56m), 12th in the pole vault (4.00), fifth in the javelin (53.00m), and 11th in the 1,500 meters (4:58.42). He finished up with 7,451 points. His PR, which came at the USATF Junior Championships is 7,562 points.

Owens came into Wednesday coming off a disappointing DQ because of a lane violation in the 400 meters to end day one. But Owens started his day off very strong, dropping a meet record of 13.74 in the 110-meter hurdles for 1,008 points and first place.

Owens then took sixth in the discus (42.72m), 11th in the pole vault (4.30m), 11th in the javelin (43.06m), and seventh in the 1,500 meters (4:44.76). He ended with 6,744 points. If you take away his disqualification and give him the 876 points he would have earned in the 400 meters, Owens would have placed fourth with 7,620

This closes out terrific high school careers for both Garland and Owens. Garland is bound for the University of Georgia, while Owens will compete for USC.
